Donation of medicines in Afghanistan – Tulipe donated 40 emergency health kits via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Crisis Centre. They were distributed to the NGO La Chaîne de l’Espoir and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Afghanistan. Half of the donated medicines were then given to the Institut Médical pour la Mère et l’Enfant (IMFE). The humanitarian operation was carried out last December, when a humanitarian corridor was opened.
The IMFE, which is run by La Chaîne de l’Espoir , received around 1.1 tonnes of made-to-measure kits. The kits will be used to provide paediatric care to the most vulnerable patients. The kits also included basic medical equipment such as compresses, thermometers, syringes, stethoscopes and other medicines. Tulipe’s action therefore meets the needs of humanitarian organisations on the ground, which contribute to providing emergency first aid and diagnostics to the Afghan population, particularly mothers and their children.
Only facilities receiving external support remain operational
In Afghanistan today, 4.7 million children and pregnant and breast-feeding women are at risk of acute malnutrition. The entire country is currently experiencing a major food crisis, and the health system is in a state of collapse. Only those health facilities receiving external support remain operational.
The IMFE in Kabul (photo below), the beneficiary of part of this donation of medicines, was set up bythe Chaîne de l’Espoir association. The aim is to provide “access to medicine and surgery that meet the highest international standards”. Located at the foot of the Ali Abad hill, near the ruins of the old Kabul hospital, this ultra-modern hospital admits almost 9,500 patients each year, offering them specific care. Its services include ophthalmology, dental care, general and interventional cardiology, as well as an obstetrics and gynaecology department. Every year, 100,000 children benefit from La Chaîne de l’Espoir ‘s care programmes . 5,000 of them undergo surgery and 55,000 benefit from the educational programmes run by the NGO, chaired by Dr Eric Cheysson.
Donation of medicines: 35 tonnes of health products distributed in 2020
Tulipe, founded in 1982, is the interface between healthcare companies and NGOs. The association is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. It federates donations from the healthcare sector. Its aim is to provide an emergency response to the needs of populations in distress, during acute health crises, natural disasters and conflicts. In 2020, the partnerships forged by Tulipe brought together 55 healthcare companies, 23 NGOs and humanitarian organisations. In 2020, 35 tonnes of health products were distributed to 350,000 people in 15 countries in crisis situations.
