1.4 tonnes of medical products to combat Ebola in the DRC with Première Urgence Internationale

The fruit of several weeks’ collaboration, Tulipe transferred 1.4 tonnes of medical products to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This operation was carried out via our partnerPremière Urgence Internationale (PUI). The target area, North Kivu, is currently affected by an Ebola epidemic that has been raging since August 2018. More than 1,000 cases, including 600 deaths, have been recorded since the start of the epidemic.

Medical products: health centres unable to meet needs

Plagued by a particularly tense political climate and the source of several internal conflicts, the DRC is considered to be one of the countries with the greatest humanitarian needs. According to the United Nations, 7.5 million people are currently in need of assistance, including 1.7 million internally displaced persons. The health system is considered “very weak”. Epidemics are particularly frequent (cholera, Ebola, hepatitis, etc.). Faced with this medical emergency, health centres are currently unable to meet the needs of people living in conflict zones.

Supplying health centres will serve to encourage local people to attend them.

Supplying health centres with medicines

This donation of medicines is designed to support PUI’s commitment to helping vulnerable populations. There are around 25,000 direct beneficiaries, with particular attention being paid to vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women and people with disabilities.

PUI’s strategy is to support health centres in areas not yet affected by the epidemic and to limit its spread through prevention, training and monitoring activities for a population of 250,000 people. The main purpose of the Tulipe donation will therefore be to supply these health centres in order to encourage people to visit these prevention centres.
