After a journey of more than 3 weeks, a medical convoy arrived at the warehouses of our partner, UOSSM, in northern Syria in mid-February 2020. Immediately after their arrival, the medical products were distributed to care centres and mobile clinics. It is in these structures, which are replacing hospitals, that people in humanitarian distress are currently being treated in a region in great difficulty.
Deplorable sanitary conditions
Since April 2019, northern Syria has been under fire from continuous bombardments and air attacks. Over the last 10 months, almost 1,000 civilians have died in the region, including 200 children. Over the same period, 89 health facilities, including 37 hospitals, have been destroyed.
Humanitarian workers on the ground are observing massive population movements. With deplorable sanitary conditions, these movements are taking place in camps for displaced people. This situation, combined with the freezing temperatures, has resulted in the proliferation of numerous contagious and chronic diseases, including influenza.
The few functioning hospitals and health centres created for the occasion are cruelly lacking in medical equipment and medicines. There are now 2.5 million people in ahumanitarian emergency in the region.
The products collected and transferred by the Tulipe association correspond to :
- Emergency medical equipment: vital emergency kits, dressings, compresses, medical consumables, equipment for minor and major surgery, etc.
– Treatment for chronic diseases: diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, etc.
– Antiparasitics, antibiotics
Faced with a situation that currently has no political solution, a second convoy will be organised by Tulipe and its partners at the end of March. The aim is to once again support a region of the world that has suffered enormously. Tulipe’s priority is not to abandon its partners in this extremely difficult phase of a conflict that is entering its ninth year.
